FAQs

Q:Does acupuncture hurt?

A:Generally it should not be painful. It is normal to feel a mild tingle or dull ache as the needle is adjusted. This sensation is known as ‘deqi’. If you do feel in any discomfort please let me know and I can adjust or remove that particular needle. Acupuncture needles are so fine that many people don’t feel them being inserted. While the needles are in place, many people feel relaxed.

Q: Are there any side effects?

A: As acupuncture involves the insertion of needles there will sometimes be a small bruise where the needle was inserted. Occasionally, people can feel dizzy or tired after a treatment, but this passes quickly.  To help me ensure that there are no unwanted side effects, please let me know any medications that you are taking. Please also let me know if you feel hot or the room is stuffy, or you are hungry/thirsty.

Q: What should do before my appointment?

A: Try not to have a large meal within an hour of your appointment as the process of digestion will alter the pattern of your pulse, and you may need to lie on your stomach. You should also avoid alcohol and food or drink that colours your tongue such as coffee or strong tea. It is a good idea to wear loose, comfortable clothing. This will help you feel relaxed during the treatment and also allows easier access to many of the acupuncture points. Please avoid wearing heavy makeup and strong perfume or aftershave.

Q: How many treatments will I need?

A: That depends on your individual condition. At first I will normally ask to see you once or twice a week. You may start to feel benefits after the first or second treatment although long-standing and chronic conditions usually need more time to improve. Once your health has stabilised you may need top-up treatments every few weeks. Traditional acupuncture is also very effective when used as preventive healthcare and many people like to go for a 'retuning' session at the change of each season throughout the year.

Q: What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

A: If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, you can do so easily through the online booking system. Please note that changes made less than 24 hours before your appointment time will still be charged in full.
